Building district heating together

A discussion evening about sustainable heat for the city center of Ostend.

To slow down climate change, it is important that we look for sustainable ways to heat our homes. The City of Ostend has the ambition to make the city centre fossil-free by 2050.

Since 2019, citizens' cooperative Beauvent has been managing a heat network in Ostend with the residual heat from the waste processing company as its source. So far, the customers of this heat network have been limited to large consumers such as hospitals, city buildings, companies and apartment buildings. But we also want to use the heat network to offer a sustainable solution for individual homes, without losing sight of vulnerable households.

To this end, the City of Ostend, together with 9 partners from Belgium, France, Ireland and the Netherlands, is investigating how we can shape a neighbourhood heat network together. We discussed this with you on Tuesday 25 November at 7.30 pm in the Grote Post in Ostend.

With more than 100 people present, this was a huge succes!

🔖 After a keynote session by Energiecoöperatie KetelhuisWG, a panel discussed the opportunities and also the difficulties when it comes to district heating (Warm 90/50, Beauvent cv, De Grote Post and AG Oostende Energiehuis). There was lots of interaction with the audience.

📍 There was also a maquette that showed where the current heating net is, and where citizens could explore and suggest future possibilities.

🎥 We will have the video of the evening available this month, for those of you who couldn't attend. A short impression can be viewed here.
